NeuroLuv for Kids Inc., is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2024 by Dr. Jeheudi Mes Onyemachi Vuai who is both a Clinical Neuropsychologist and School Psychologist. The purpose of the organization is to help impoverished children and youth with neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders access brain-based interventions to significantly improve academic and social emotional performance. Neurocognitive deficits (i.e., memory, executive functions, language, phonological processing, visual spatial, social perception and language) are the very foundations of learning and self-regulatory behaviors.
Educational interventions typically fail children with neurodevelopmental disorders because they target academic skills rather than processing deficits. Families of these children often do not have the financial resources to receive help from these interventions as they are not typically covered by insurance and thus continue to experience academic failure and social emotional difficulties.
The impact of poverty on brain development can affect the child’s learning, mental health and prosocial skills. New research shows that a child’s socioeconomic level (SES) can change brain morphology with behavioral, pathological, and developmental consequences. Moreover, and astonishingly, it can also have far-reaching consequences for the child’s brains that begin in childhood and persist into adulthood. The negative impact of poor nutrition, chronic stress, and environmental hazards (such as pollution and inadequate housing conditions), are more likely to affect children from impoverished communities. These factors can influence the child’s executive functioning, language, academic, socioemotional and put them at risk for various neuropsychiatric illnesses.
Further, research has shown that impoverished environments have a negative impact on neurodevelopment worsening the child’s learning potential. Without neurocognitive rehabilitation, these children’s difficulties only worsen, putting them at heightened risk of substance abuse, gang violence, mental illness, homelessness, and involvement in the criminal justice system later in life.
This is an invitation for you or your organization to consider a donation to help these children achieve educational and prosocial skills to promote optimum neurocognitive efficiency regardless of race, cultural background, color, or creed. No child should have to be left behind because they lack appropriate resources to access today’s technology to enhance overall well-being.
